Land Acknowledgement
Belegarth MCS recognizes that our event, Armageddon, is taking place on the occupied territory of the Myaamia (Miami) peoples. We acknowledge that Indiana was built through the displacement and erasure of Indigenous peoples, the original stewards of this land, including the Miami, Potawatomi, Piankeshaw, Wea, Kickapoo, and Shawnee nations.
Through treaties, forced removal, and harmful federal policies, Indigenous communities were dispossessed of their lands, cultures, and rights, and these injustices continue to impact Indigenous peoples today. We honor the resilience of Indigenous communities, recognize the ongoing struggle for sovereignty and recognition, and reaffirm our commitment to learning more about Indigenous rights, cultures, traditions, and ways of knowing across all of the areas in which Belegarth takes place.
We further recognize that the Miami are hosting their All Nations Gathering in Rockville starting Saturday June 6th at 10:00 AM and ending Sunday at 5:00 PM. It is a public powwow with drumming, singing, dancing, storytelling, a living village and traditional craft vendors. This is a great opportunity for us to support this culture directly and we encourage you to take some time Saturday or even after leaving Billie Creek on Sunday to attend the gathering and participate respectfully. Please see Miami Nation of Indians of Indiana website for more info.
We do not say any of this to take away from the goal of the event, which is for us to have fun on and off the field with our friends, and celebrate each others achievements together but as remind us all that, while we have fun at Armageddon, we remember that we do so on land that was stolen from its original caretakers and that we do so in a way that respects the land and its people.
